Back to School after Divorce in Mobile, AL
I have my boys a substantial amount of time in the summer. We settle into a routine. I work, they play. They hang out with their little sister and their stepmom, we have discussions about manners and how being respectful goes a long way. I try to compress 9 months of fathering into 30 days. It’s tough.
They’re now back with their mom. I know they love her and she loves them. I know they’re happy at their other home. I miss them. I know they’ll be back in two short weeks for two short days. The months turn into years, and, before long, I’ll be helping them move off to college.
I realize that my melancholy applies generally to parents across the board, but visitation and custody are issues that long outlast the divorce process and I just don’t get the feeling that a lot of folks really get it. Here’s a good recent blog post about a mom’s take on getting the children back at the end of the summer: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-kate-roberts/summer-back-to-school-and-divorce_b_7963418.html
Okay, what’s the bottom line? The bottom line is that divorcing parents really have to take an emotional inventory and internalize the idea of how divorce changes, not only your life, but the lives of your children.
I’ve long advocated the idea of true joint physical custody as the proper default parenting arrangement following divorce. It’s not always going to work, but, if it can, then it should.
