As I write this post, I am waiting on a Final Divorce Decree in a case in which we could not agree with the other side and were forced to conduct a trial. That was eight days ago. The Judge promised to issue the order within ten days, so the deadline has not passed, but when you’re waiting on a custody decision, the weight can be crushing.
The Guardian ad Litem issued a report and recommendation on Monday, so what gives? Who knows? Unfortunately, there is no shortage of divorce cases in Mobile County, Alabama, so the Judge has many important decisions to make in literally hundreds of cases, not just ours. Beyond custody, there were a few other items on which we could not agree, so the Judge has to make those decisions as well.
Let me say it one more time, parents, in ten to twenty years, it will not matter, and no one will remember, who got the Ninja Juicer. However, depending on how you conducted yourself, the wounds of a custody dispute in a contested divorce may not be healed. Don’t let your pride, or your lawyer, keep you from doing your best to lay the foundations for the best co-parenting relationship you can have with your estranged spouse. Amber James, an attorney who specializes in divorce and family law in my homeland of the Great Tennessee Valley has some great ideas about how to get started with co-parenting:

As always, this advice does not apply when there is criminal activity involved. You do not have to subject yourself or your children to abuse of any kind.
I believe I’ve done a good job of preparing my Client for the wait and it appears that the Client is holding it together pretty well. No frantic phone calls, texts, or emails, so far. So, as I check the electronic filing system one last time on Friday afternoon, it looks like we will have to wait on the Judge’s decision.
