By now, most folks in the Greater Mobile Metropolitan Area have seen the TV commercial of a local lawyer in which a “Divorce Cake” is featured prominently and then partially consumed by a sexy female “dee-vor-say.” The message is that, if you hire this firm, you’ll somehow get more out of the divorce process. It’s catchy, but the ad reminds me more of a late-night 1-900 phone sex ad than a call to action during a situation at which so much is at stake.
I know the lawyer who runs the ad. He is a good guy. He works hard. I don’t know what he charges or what his track record is for securing more Divorce Cake for his clients. That’s not the point. If his ad didn’t attract clients, he wouldn’t be paying to run it on cable television.
Divorce is painful. Divorce is like a death in the family. The only way through the pain and agony of having your family divided is forgiveness. Having more cake means nothing more than that you did not forgive; you held a grudge; you held on to anger; you failed to realize that your former spouse was in pain… your cake consumes you.
Once you make the decision to go forward with a divorce, you are doing yourself a great disservice if you refuse to make a serious effort to agree with your estranged spouse about how to proceed. I am reminded of the old saying, “Pigs get fed; Hogs get slaughtered.” Duking it out in Divorce Court is financially and emotionally draining. At the end of it, if you don’t come to an agreement, the only folks eating cake will be the lawyers. You’ll be feeding your kids tuna fish and saltines, trying to stave off bankruptcy.
I have been there. I can help you retain the resources you will need to re-establish your home. I can help you reject anger and navigate rationally through the process. Contact me at (251)445-0891, or email me at ron@mcbaylaw.com before you start trying to slice up that Divorce Cake. The firm foundation of success you prepare for the future of your family will long outlast any temporary sweetness of misperceived victory.
