Step-parent adoptions are some of the most rewarding cases I handle. Any time you can take action that gives a child a more secure, permanent home, the professional and emotional benefits are heartwarming.
I recently met with a family in my office to review and sign paperwork that would set in motion a stepfather’s adoption of his stepdaughter. In my office, this fourteen year old young lady was almost giddy with anticipation and pride for what was taking place. Her biological father had never been a part of her life and she finally had what all little girls need; a daddy.
Her biological father consented to the adoption, though he had long ago met the qualifications for abandonment under the law. To his credit, he demonstrated this one final act of kindness for the daughter with whim he never really established any relationship. For a little more detail and definitions, Steven Eversole has written a great piece you can find at http://www.birminghamdivorceblog.com/2006/03/articles/family-law/adoption-family-law/step-parent-adoption/
When there is consent, or proof of abandonment in Alabama, step-parent adoptions are relatively simple and the process is streamlined. As a result, the costs may be less than you’re imagining and, compared to other family law cases, adoptions move along pretty quickly. There are a few forms that must be sign in front of a notary. There is a filing fee. There are a couple of agencies that must sign off on the packet. Finally, there’s a hearing in front of the Probate Judge.
If you have a blended family and want to give a child a gift that will last a lifetime, take the steps to make that legal bond permanent. I will take you through the process and make sure that, when it’s over, you can take the “step” out of “step-parent.” Call me at 251-445-0891, or email me at ron@mcbaylaw.com.
