Deciding to divorce is difficult. Accepting the realization that all of the promises, commitments, dreams, and expectations of your marriage are over, if done properly, requires a great deal of introspection and self examination. Even so, once you begin the process, you’ll find that everyone has an opinion, myth, or misconception that they’re happy to share with you in your time of need.
Here’s a short article identifying the categories of those you may encounter along the way:
Often times, I find the contested divorce process to be similar in plot turns and twists to a Seinfeld episode. Like a Seinfeld episode, some third party is always there to offer an opinion or advice; sometimes good, sometimes bad. Keeping focus on the important issues can be difficult, especially when the voices in your head start singing with the chorus of meddlers, pot-stirrers, and various other unsavory characters.
At the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with the results of your divorce. Did you give up too much? Did you give up too little? Did you do the right thing for your children? You must master your divorce domain.
